Getting the most out of the unit you've got
Half the heat pumps that struggle in winter aren't broken, they're just the wrong size or the wrong style for the room. A unit that's too small never catches up on a cold night, and one that's too big short-cycles and never settles. Right sizing beats brand or grunt every time.

How often should a heat pump be serviced?
Once a year is the rule of thumb for most Dunedin homes. If you're near the coast at St Clair, St Kilda or out on the Peninsula, the salt air means it's worth a look more often. A unit that runs hard all winter earns its yearly clean.
What does a heat pump service include?
We clean and check the filters, wash the indoor and outdoor coils, clear the condensate drain, and check the gas charge and electrical connections. Then we run it through both heating and the frost defrost cycle to make sure it's actually performing, not just switching on.
Why is my heat pump not heating properly?
Usually it's a dirty filter or a blocked coil making it work too hard, or it's iced up and stuck in defrost on a damp day. It can also be low on gas, or simply too small for the room it's trying to heat. A service sorts the first lot, and we can tell you if it's a sizing problem instead.
Do you service heat pumps you did not install?
No. We only service and repair the heat pumps we installed ourselves, so we can stand behind every unit we look after. If we didn't fit yours, we're not the ones to service it, but we're happy to quote a new install if you're thinking about replacing it.
